Patrick Sunbury Design is based in Northern California and is composed of a landscape design studio, a working farm and a botanical garden. We design and build residential design projects across the entirety of California with the majority of our work in the San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles areas.

Patrick Sunbury is a fifth generation Californian with deep family roots in agriculture, conservation and construction. A highly functional, naturalist approach to design is the mainstay of our work.

Our work is defined by a love for native plants, authentic sustainable materials and inventive space planning.

We design at different climates on varied geography with multiple scales. Our work is a collection of projects across the state that uniquely address the people and place. Context is everything. A well designed landscape looks better each year ad infinitum.

Design Approach

Our studio bridges the the diversity of ideas found in landscape design, master planning, horticulture and abstract art.

We believe in a bespoke and highly crafted approach to landscape design. The design process is focused on quality and not quantity. We embrace hand drawing, it’s pace encourages thoughtfulness and seamless design. Every plant is carefully drawn one by one in a planting plan.

The most important learning comes from actual construction and we enjoy getting our hands dirty. Hands on construction is at the core of our practice. We are passionate about landscape design and believe it has an important role to play in improving people’s lives.

People

Patrick J. Sunbury is the Principal and has been designing landscapes for over a decade on sites across the nation and the world.

At the core of Patrick’s design is a deep fascination with plants that has developed a “plant whisperer” approach of integrating native, climate-adapted and edible plants into residential landscapes. This is coupled with a rigorous focus on functionality and aesthetics from his architecture background. Patrick also operates a small, family run tea farm and botanical garden in the California Delta. The farm and its gardens serve as a laboratory to test new designs and observe plant/material suitability for California gardens.

Patrick holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture degree from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and a Bachelors in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. As part of his time at SWA Group, his work won the American Architecture Prize in 2017, National ASLA Honor Awards in 2016, and Texas ASLA Honor Awards in 2018, 2019. Patrick is also a licensed and bonded contractor in the state of California (#1074390).
